Upanayanam, the initiation ceremony for young boys between their age of seven and twelve is celebrated as a grand occasion by the Brahmins of Tamil Nadu. It is a ceremony that has significant of initiating the boys to gurukulam education in the ancient days. It is also a ceremony that is said to initiate a budding teen into his adulthood. It is supposed to provide a beacon on his upbringing, remind him of his duties, and make him aware that his father is a guide who can mentor him to shoulder more responsibilities.
